Of Homer and Doctor Evil
Mohammed Ziyaad Hassen thinks that Homer Simpson and Doctor Evil are essentially the same person. The major distinguishing factor is that Doctor Evil has ambition and motivation. And thats why he has friggen sharks with friggen layer beams on their friggen heads. Oh how would Homer love friggen sharks with friggen lazer beams on their friggen heads.

Of materialism and familiarity
Mohammed Ziyaad Hassen thinks that HOME IS WHERE YOUR STUFF IS. Any house can be made familiar or homely just by possessions.

so...the more stuff we have, the more familiar our world becomes?

Mohammed Ziyaad Hassen at 12:42pm June 2
the more stuff we have, the more we see it, the more we can familiarise ourselves in new environments. Such as new houses.
Samina Anwary at 1:29pm June 2
You don't have to have a lot of stuff to make a place your home. As long as you're surrounded by stuff that is your own. Whether it's a calendar from 7 years ago, that you just don't have the heart to get rid of, or your favourite couch. Or whatever. Posters, plants, picture frames..
Uzayr Jeenah at 1:31pm June 2
Ned ned ned... since when are you so materialistic.. gotta agree with Mac on this one...
Samina Anwary at 1:44pm June 2
At no point did Ned say "LOTS of stuff"
He just said stuff.
How's that materialistic?
Haroon Wadee at 1:56pm June 2
one is just trying to BE....and sumtyms the possessions give us a sense of who we ARE...yes they are attachments to this world and hence materialistic, but often they serve as reminders and certain possession just laced with meaning that transcends the material reality...hence some NOT ALL posessions can serve as a tool or medium to take us to another level of consciousness....it could be a book, a childhood toy, a t-shirt purchased at a rally that inspired one...etc....
Mohammed Ziyaad Hassen at 3:54pm June 2
The issue isn't accumulation which relates to materialism. The issue is familiarity. I just moved into a new flat at tygerberg hospital. I'll be living at a hospital. In an crummy area, Didnt like the flat first few times i saw it. Only felt homely when i unpacked. Seeing my stuff around the place made me feel somewhat comfortable.
However, with that being said and taking the current discourse of materialism into account, being comfortable and having a place of solitude is important. Again, familiarity is the issue, not opulent possessions that 'define' us.
I bought cool cereal bowls that are practical and smart, and that defines me :)
